We joined forces with ELLE magazine for a Spring Summer 2012 event at our Spring Street store. Anne Slowey, the very chic Fashion News Director at ELLE, spoke to us, with her charming date for the evening – daughter Afton.

Why do you think a bag is such a personal and important thing for a woman?

Because it is a mirror-image of our brains! A bag is a woman’s to do list, wish list, and safety box all-in-one. No wonder men are too terrified to dive in!

Meanwhile, men seem much happier to own a ‘man bag’ these days – what do you think is the perfect all-round style for men?

A vertical envelope or camera bag. Say no to backpacks! But I’m dying for the return of the fanny pack (bum bag to UK readers!) for men.

The Mulberry blog’s handbag explodes with stuff when opened – Blackberry, pouches for bits and pieces, makeup, diary, umbrella etc… what is in your bag?

Yikes! Diapers, baby food, baby bottle (Afton calls it “mama”), wallet, sunglasses, napkin from last night’s restaurant, lipstick, an unread New Yorker from August. Oh, and a very roughed up iPhone, er, I mean, baby toy.

Other than bags, what other accessories are crucial to your daily look?

SHOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m living in men’s laceups but I’ll be breaking out my Manolo pumps and pointy-toe low-heels tomorrow!

It’s almost party season – what will you choose as your evening look for the festivities?

I’m on a diet so I hope to wear something bright and colorful come December. I’m feeling NEON!

I love Brian Ferry and The Cure for getting ready, but can’t resist a little Nicki Minaj to keep things rolling. Florence Welch is great for the morning after.
