BRILLIANT BRITAIN IN HONG KONG

We officially launched Brilliant Britain in Asia with an in-store exhibition celebrating British craft and creativity as part of the UK government’s ‘Creativity is GREAT’ week, hosted in our Harbour City store in Hong Kong.

The exhibition showcases work from selected British craftspeople from the Brilliant Britain guide, including Simon Hasan, Jacqueline Cullen, Miranda Watkins, Bethan Laura Wood, Chris Bracey, Eribe and exclusively for one day, a leather craftsman from our British factory in Somerset demonstrating how the leather is prepared and worked on to create a Mulberry bag.

You can visit the exhibition until Sunday 18 November in the Mulberry Harbour City Store, G302 Harbour City, Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong.

SUPPER IN SINGAPORE

The official opening of our new Asian flagship store in Singapore was celebrated with cocktails followed by dinner overlooking the bay at Catalunya restaurant.

Lana Del Rey cut the ribbon with Mulberry CEO Bruno Guillon and Creative Director Emma Hill before an exclusive performance of her most famous songs. We also brought a little bit of Britishness over to celebrate, with ‘queen’s guards’ outside the store!

NEW STORE IN SINGAPORE

Last week we opened our first Asian flagship store in Singapore, at Mandarin Gallery on Orchard Road.

If you explore the store you will see a design that reflects our dedication to craftsmanship, with limestone-tiled floors, curved timber follies and brass accents. Handcrafted furniture adds to the sense of a natural, refined environment, influenced by the themes of Englishness and craft.

This new flagship store stocks the full collection of men’s and women’s core and seasonal accessories, as well as women’s shoes and ready-to-wear. The collection includes a limited edition Del Rey bag created to celebrate the store opening.

NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN

Inspired by our London Fashion Week show, where Claridge’s was transformed into a fantasy English garden, our New York correspondent visited The New York Botanical Garden to see what events and exhibitions were coming up.

New York Botanical Garden >

Gardens and green spaces in New York are precious pockets of peace and quiet (certainly a very different peace and quiet to the fields and streams surrounding Mulberry’s factory The Rookery back in Somerset).

New York Botanical Garden

The good news is that parks throughout Manhattan and within travelling distance are playing host to an increasing number of remarkable art installations. The Frieze show on Randall’s Island was a fantastic celebration of work and place. Now, Spanish artist Manolo Valdés is the latest to be given an open space for his dramatic work.

Example of Manolo Valdes work

Opening on 22 September, Monumental Sculpture sees seven new (and quite breathtaking) pieces at five sites within The New York Botanical Garden, on show till Spring 2013. If you’re not familiar with the place, the Botanical Garden, now more than 120 years old, comprises 250 acres of land (including a 50-acre forest that represents the woodland that originally covered the city) with Family and Adventure gardens, and loads more besides.

For art lovers, or green-fingered types who love art too, there’s a talk from Dale Lanzone on November 3rd, discussing how Valdés’ work is influenced by nature.

An All-Garden Pass ticket starts at $20 for adults. Your quickest journey will be made by hopping on the MTA Harlem Local to Botanical Garden Station. It’s about 20 minutes or so from Grand Central, and if rain is forecast, travel in your wellies. Oh, and one final thing: it is Park etiquette not to climb the trees but we’ve seen no rules against a cheeky game of hide and seek.

RICH TABLE

Our San Francisco correspondent seeks out organic food and crafted space at Rich Table in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley.

Rich Table >

Last week I met with husband and wife team Evan and Sarah Rich behind the newly opened Rich Table. It was the morning after a busy Sunday night service and they were surprisingly relaxed considering how much has happened in the few months since they got the lease for their space. Rich Table opened in July and they have been serving up delicious food to a full house most nights since. Even when the restaurant is closed on Tuesday they are up early, scouting around in one of the Bay area’s amazing farmers markets finding ingredients to inspire their daily changing menu.

Rich Table

The restaurant is a lovely, light space, lots of natural wood and materials with personal touches everywhere. Evan and Sarah worked very closely with the design team as the concept evolved, rolling their sleeves up and doing a lot of the work themselves, sanding down the beams and ripping off the dry wall. This involvement is evident throughout – Evan’s handiwork etching Rich into the stripped beam through to the hand picked wood from Petaluma in Northern California. All elegant hints to complement their food ethos ‘we work really hard to make things seem simple and tasty’, serving distinctive fine dining quality food in a casual, vibrant, modern environment.

Rich Table

‘We swapped the Lower East Side in New York for ocean views in San Francisco’s Presidio.’

Evan and Sarah met about ten years when working together at New York’s Bouley, Evan jokes that Sarah was his boss and basically told him ‘no date, no job’. They have been together ever since and got married in 2008. The decision to move to San Francisco followed, putting all their belongings into storage and buying two one-way tickets to LA. Picking up Sarah’s mum’s car at LAX they drove along the West Coast, from LA to Seattle. They toyed with the idea of settling in Portland, but San Francisco felt right. Both have worked in some of the best kitchens in the Bay Area – Michael Mina, Quince and Coi – but started to explore their own restaurant last year with their pop up venture ‘Chef’s night off’ – taking over kitchens in different, local restaurants for the night. Working out what worked and what didn’t, they built up a great reputation and menu ideas at the same time.

Rich Table

Rich Table is a real collaboration – they have worked with most of the team for a number of years and all end the day sitting around a table talking about the events and the menu. And with a daily changing menu there’s always a lot to talk about. Evan is happily enthusiastic about the huge emphasis placed on the quality of ingredients and where they come from. They source as much as possible locally and have formed some great relationships with local suppliers who share the same passion for quality as they do.

‘One of the beautiful curses of living here: there is lots of fresh produce to inspire – go to the market and see what looks good! And you can do this all year round, the market is still full of good stuff in winter!’

Sarah and Evan in Rich Table

Sarah and Evan’s food inspirations

Food dream: to visit Chateaubriand in Paris.
Food memory: A curry stand in the ShiJu market in Japan where an old lady has been serving bowls of steaming delicious curry to locals for years.
Family food: Evan’s mother’s sugar snap peas with horse radish and honey mustard.

TOKYO CITY GUIDE

Vogue Japan’s Fashion Market Director Saori Masuda takes us on a tour of her favourite places in Tokyo.

Downtown Tokyo is the backdrop of the authentic quintessential scenery you see on postcards, in films and on TV. In May, a new addition came, the ‘Tokyo Sky Tree’, the world’s highest broadcasting tower. The area is considered a hip an interesting place to be, but the general sense is still one of classic Tokyo – exactly how I dreamt it while living in Europe. You may think of Tokyo as a city full of technology and skyscrapers, but to me, downtown represents the feeling of history and tradition.

Downtown Tokyo

At the moment, Tokyo is at the end of the rainy season and it’s hot and humid. A good place to be at this time is Meiji Kinenkan’s Beer Terrace Sekirei. Even if you are not partial to beer it has a lovely atmosphere. If you have more time to spare, you should also visit the holy Meiji Shrine’s power spot.

Next up, for food the Nezu Café inside the Nezu Museum (you need to pay the admission fee to enter the cafe) is situated inside a picturesque Japanese garden and Baishinka in Yakumo is lovely as well, serving traditional Japanese congee breakfast, and the tea in the afternoon is highly recommended.

Nezu Cafe

Although I’ve been lucky enough to visit spas all around the world, I consider Japanese spas to be the best there is. Their technique is amazing, but it’s also the service, they pay attention to all the little details. There are more than 50 spa places that I could recommend but the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo’s spa has a great modern/traditional Tokyo vibe and you can look out on the amazing scenery from high on the 37th floor from the jacuzzi and treatment rooms.

Don’t forget shopping! As with any international city there are so many shops to choose from, from the traditional local boutiques and markets to beautiful luxury flagships. The iconic London store Dover Street Market launched in Ginza this March and it’s the place to go for it’s breadth of collections and beautiful space. You can also purchase Mulberry’s special edition bag there as well!

Another boutique I should introduce you to is a Japanese brand called Theatre Products, their boutique is in a little alleyway in Harajyuku. They are slightly retro and kitsch, it always reminds me of the Japan style that everyone covets.

DOVER STREET MARKET

An exclusive collection of Maisies have been released in Dover Street Market in London and Tokyo.

Dover Street Market >

The exclusive collection at Dover Street Market includes a Clipper, Clutch and two Totes in classic Mulberry Black and Oak or new season highlight Flame.

Dover Street Market was devised by Comme des Garcons founder Rei Kawakubo and is renowned for its innovative store design, installations and for pioneering the idea of a retail shopping environment akin to a gallery space.

Rei Kawakubo: “I wanted to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos: the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision.”

FARMERS’ MARKETS

One of our passions is amazing food. At our London Fashion Week dinner at The Savile Club in February chef Tom Aikens chose regional and seasonal ingredients for the evening’s menu, and local farmers’ markets are great for fresh, locally sourced produce. Our correspondent in San Francisco visited the city’s famous markets to see how it celebrates all things food.

A big part of San Francisco’s food culture is the access to really great, fresh, delicious ingredients. There are impressive farmer’s markets dotted all around the city; probably the biggest is the Ferry Plaza Famer’s Market – a true feast to the eyes, crowded, colourful, and with endless tasting samples. And if you don’t make it to the markets there are great stores like the brilliant BiRite Market with it’s amazing local and farm-direct produce, organic meats, artisanal products and knowledgeable staff.
